The varsity crews are getting 20+K each outing in the eights with additional mileage in the small boats. We have converted 4 pairs over to doubles with the intention of increasing overall boat sense and "watermanship" as well as to re-balance the athletes. This should result in fewer injuries due to over use and allow each rower to learn to row on both sides of the boat.
Pictured above are the two women's varsity eights during an outing last week (I think it accurately depicts the rough conditions we've had to deal with recently). We have only 5 seniors on the squad and with all four of the junior rowers abroad the program is almost entirely made from the Class of 2014. These two eights simultaneously broke the previous Bridge to Dock course record this past Saturday which gives us an indication of just how deep this team is at the moment.
We also have a number of first-year members brand new to the sport. Coach Hurley has a novice eight rowing daily that is advancing quickly and will be ready to race at the Quinsiggamond Snake Regatta on Oct. 15.
The men have three members of the junior class abroad and one injured for the season. Despite their absence, the two senior Captains (Peter C. Miller and Oliver Scholle) look to lead this small but talented squad as they build off of the impressive spring season of 2011. These men have a lot of small boat work to look forward to as we approach the fall racing season knowing that it will pay off in the long run.
The first-year men have already had two record setting performances here on the river. They have set the course records for the MF4+ and the MF2x over the Bridge to Dock course which is roughly 5.5K. I know that Coach Foglia is proud of his men for their early season accomplishments but looks forward to the very near future as these men best their own times.
