Fall 2011 Pre-view

It's hard to believe but the 2011-2012 school year is nearly upon us. The majority of the first-years are on their AESOP trips and a few of the upperclassmen have found they way onto campus. Some new equipment has arrived and been made ready, and we have added a few exterior racks to the boathouse for overflow storage. The boathouse itself survived Irene though the driveway, a few of the trees and one roof panel did not. So we have an improved driveway, a new roof panel...and a few less trees. But perhaps the biggest addition for the upcoming year is the new assistant coaching staff.

I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome Liz Hurley and Jesse Foglia to Bates and to our rowing family. I have had just a couple weeks to get them up-to-speed but I can safely say that I am pleased already. I am very much looking forward to working with Liz & Jesse as I am confident that their contributions to the program are going to be significant. You can read more about their backgrounds on the team website.

Two new assistants coming in means that two old ones had to leave. We had to say goodbye to Meghan and Tom following the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, CA. They both did a fantastic job for Bates and were instrumental in advancing the program. Meghan returned to her hometown of Buffalo to (begrudgingly) put her Law degree to work and Tom has moved to the next level of collegiate rowing by accepting the Frosh Men's coaching position at George Washington University.
Thanks for everything, guys! And we wish you luck in the next phase of your lives.

A few short months ago we said good bye to the Class of 2011. Their contribution to the overall well-being and performance level of this program is second to none. Case in point: the Class of 2011 is the only class to win four President's Cup Regattas. This "first ever" achievement is significant in that it exemplifies the depth and continuity of the program. The Class of 2011 carried forward a standard set by previous classes and has left behind an expectation for the classes yet to follow.

With that (and finally) I would like to welcome the Class of 2015. Made up of individuals from places like Seattle (WA), Pittsford and Harrison (NY), Marietta (GA), and Orono (ME); and from schools like Kent, Westminster, Taft, Wayne Fleet, and Noble & Greenough, the Class of 2015 is well rounded and experienced. I am very confident that this class will embrace the Bates College standard and not shy away from the expectation for excellence.
